It may be called "Oktoberfest", but the big event at the RUIDOSO CONVENTION CENTER this October actually starts mid-September in the Mother Land. It all began with a German Royal wedding on October 12th, 1810. That year, Crown Prince Ludwig of Germany married Princess Therese von Sachsen-Hildburghausen, (that’s easy for you to say) we’ll just call her “Sach”. and held a big party near Munich. The event was so popular that its been repeated every year since. The original celebration, which un-doubtably included music, dancing and horse racing, eventually became world famous and has been celebrated worldwide in all BEER drinking countries.
Over the years the festival has taken on new and differing features such as carnival rides and sports competitions depending on where it is held. However, the one universal constant is the consumption of BEER! This is great news to many of us and summed up so eloquently by that everyday, average American Homer Simpson in his immortal words…whoo hoo…BEER…arggghhh!
There is nothing like the promise of cold suds to awaken the spirit and spark camaraderie among men. And by happy coincidence, this process is actually enhanced by the consumption of this wonderful golden elixir…stein upon frosty stein. The Germans had one thing figured out (and by law they must maintain strict standards) and that is how to make a full flavored smooth quaff that simply tastes better with each draft. Naturally, other beers just as good are also now available at most Oktoberfests, including the one here in Ruidoso.
There are also lots of wonderful foods like traditional Bratwurst and other tasty sausages as well as traditional American Foods treats that go well with BEER. Of course, you can also expect great entertainment and fun for the whole family. There’s even a Kinderhall for the little ones! So make a point of coming to our beautiful Mountain community to join us all in honoring the probably now deceased Crown Prince Ludwig and his bride “Sach”.
