Mountain Annie's (Midtown Ruidoso's Dinner Theater)
Written by Chuck Duncan • Photography by Doug McAlister

Looking for something different? You’ll find it at Midtown Ruidoso’s Dinner Theater, Mountain Annie’s. Great food, a wonderful wine list, a casual atmosphere and some of the best “down home” entertainment this side of the Pecos makes this a “must do” when in town.

Mountain Annie’s offers a beautiful patio where you can enjoy a drink with friends in the shaded garden as a wondrous Ruidoso evening settles around you. When you are ready you can stroll into the intimate theater where you will be served an elegant feast created by your hosts, the Strathmanns. Mountain Annie herself, the gracious Phyllis Strathmann, may drop by your table to welcome you personally.

Once the entertainment begins you are in for a wild, fun-filled ride. Two of the most versatile musicians you will ever hear, George and Barbara Staerkel, will take you through four generations of songs that everyone can enjoy. George Staerkel was a member of the 60’s band the “Tokens”, most remembered for the hit “The Lion Sleeps Tonight” and, yes, George was the lead singer (tenor part) and he still really delivers on this tune. His beautiful wife, Barbara, is a natural entertainer, a fourth generation Barleen, and one of the most engaging stage performers you will ever see. She fills the room with a presence that is at once engaging and electrifying. She does a rendition from the “Phantom of the Opera” that will have you on your feet! And if that is not enough, George plays 33 different instruments and tells the best bad jokes you’ve ever heard.

So next time you are in town check out Mountain Annie’s and enjoy something a little different.
